Brain Injury
What are brain injuries?
It is estimated that over 700,000 Australians have sustained a brain injury. Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is any damage to the brain that happens after birth. Loss of function and symptoms depend on which areas of the brain have been damaged.
Some of the causes of ABI include:
disease – such as Alzheimer’s disease and cancer
lack of oxygen – called a hypoxic brain injury
trauma – such as an impact to the head during a motor vehicle accident or a fall
stroke – when a blood vessel inside the brain is blocked or bursts
alcohol or drugs
Symptoms after brain injury include weakness, spasticity, loss of coordination and balance problems.
