Spinal Cord Injury Guidelines

WHAT IS IT?

At Neuro Junction, we strive to stay abreast of the recent developments in the field of Neurological Rehabilitation.

In 2023 a set of guidelines were published for the physiotherapy management of adults with a spinal cord injury across the continuum of care. These guidelines were developed through a co-ordinated effort between researchers and clinicians across Australia and New Zealand.

The aim of the guidelines is to provide evidence recommendations and consensus-based opinions statements on over 100 questions related to the physiotherapy management of spinal cord injury. Some of these topics include; motor skills, pain, shoulder subluxation, bone mineral density, spasticity, strength and others.

Here are some of our favourite statements:

“People with SCI should be empowered to manage their injuries including managing their physical rehabilitation and physical function.”

“People with SCI should have physiotherapy as appropriate for the management of impairments, activity limitations or participation opportunities throughout their lives.”

“People with SCI should receive appropriate equipment to maximise their independence, community participation or physical activity.”

HOW CAN THIS BENEFIT YOU?

Our team of Community Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists benefit greatly from a consolidation of recommendations based on the most relevant research and consensus-based opinion from the most experienced spinal cord injury clinicians. It is vitally important that our care is driven by evidence-based recommendations and expert consensus. Not only will this help us work best alongside you to achieve your goals but helps us to make stronger arguments in your favour when advocating for you.
